9 Tips to Find the Ideal Employees

Source

The key to business success, especially if that business is a startup, is finding the best employees available to you.

If you pick an employee who is merely good or shock-horror merely good enough, then your business may never reach its full potential.

So, how do you go about finding the perfect employees? Here are a few things that could help:

#1 Define the Role

Before you assign HR the task of advertising for a new candidate, you must first determine what exactly the role will be. It is only when you have a well-defined role that you can find the ideal candidate to fill the position.

#2 Skills Tests

It’s obvious, but the perfect employee is an employee who knows how to get the job done.

There’s no point hiring someone who has little if any grasp on how to effectively complete the tasks you give him or her, so in your quest to hire the ideal employee, you should almost certainly make skills tests a part of the hiring process.

#3 Get Leads

If you have contacts working in the same (or similar) industry to you, then asking them which of their previous employees they really rated, and then chasing up those people to see if they would be interested in working for you, can be a great way to find someone who’ll fit right in and do well from the off.

#4 Widen Your Net

If you’ve avoided recruiting employees from out of state or even overseas because of the extra red tape, like arranging a h1b to green card, for example, then you are doing your business a disservice.

Why?

Because if you want to find the absolute best person for the job, the more people you can consider, the more likely it is you’ll fit upon the man or woman who’s the perfect fit; who knows exactly what’s required of them and works well with your team.

Don’t limit yourself.

#5 Look into Their Background

Checking into the background of candidates before you employ them is just plain smart. IOt doesn’t matter how good their resume looks or what they say they can do; you never know what skeletons they’re hiring in their closet.

That perfect transcript they presented you? It could be a fake. Their pleasant demeanor? That could be a front, and if you do a little digging, you might find out that they’ve rubbed every single person they ever worked with the wrong way.

Of course, they might be just as perfect as they seem, but you need to know for sure.

#6 Meet with Them Informally

Sometimes, especially if you’re a small operation and you can’t afford to hire HR staff to recruit for you, meeting your candidates in an informal group setting is a great way to get a feel for them and see how well they’ll mesh with you and any other employees you have.

Why?

Because personality counts just as much as capability at work and you can never really know how someone acts when they’re in a formal interview setting.

#7 Ask Unexpected Questions

If you want to see how well your candidates deal with unexpected situations; those times when they have to think on their feet, and you want to weed out the weak from the strong, throwing in an unexpected question or two to the interview will really help you to find your ideal candidate.

It can be something as simple as asking them who their favorite superhero is or what kind of dog they would be. Anything that comes out of leftfield and puts them on the back foot will help you get the measure of them.

#8 Throw them in at the Deep End

If you really want to see how well positioned a candidate is to join your business, there’s nothing like throwing them in at the deep end to achieve your aim.

Have them come in and help you or your team work on a difficult problem for a while. If they demonstrate knowledge, ability, creativity and a willingness to work with your team happily, then chances are they will be a good fit, and you won’t be disappointed by your decision to employ them.

#9 Offer a Great Salary

Last, but by no means least, you really do need to offer decent compensation for the role if you want to attract the ideal employee. Think about it, if they’re so ideal, they’re going to be well in demand, and that means, if you don’t offer them enough, they’ll walk.

I hope this helps you build a staff you can be proud of and a business that’s solid as a rock!
