Working as a Beautician: What You Need to Know

September 24, 2020 by Christopher

The Australian personal care and beauty industry market is expected to reach over £5.25 billion by 2025 and this popularity is unlikely to change in the future.

In actual fact, research has shown that even if there’s a recession in Australia, hairdressers and beauticians need not be too worried. They are considered a necessity of personal grooming, so the demand for these services tends to be resilient even during uncertain economic conditions.

Beauticians are highly trained professionals who use their specialist skills and knowledge to provide a range of beauty treatments and therapies.

If you want to find out more about what it’s like to work as a beautician and why you should consider becoming one, then keep reading below.

The Role of a Beautician

Beauticians often offer a range of treatments to their clients. Some of the treatments that beauticians offer include:

  • Manicures and pedicures
  • Nail art services – this can include acrylic nails, nail extensions, and gel nails
  • Hair removal – this can include leg, body, and facial waxing
  • Eyebrow shaping – including tinting, plucking, and threading
  • Massage, aromatherapy, reflexology, and hydrotherapy
  • Spray tans
  • Makeover – this can include make-up for a bridal party
  • Facials
  • Nonsurgical skin treatments
  • Specialist treatments – this can include electro-therapy

Beauticians also have to complete a range of other tasks. These could include:

  • Answering telephone calls, greeting clients, and responding to emails
  • Managing bookings
  • Ordering supplies
  • Keeping up to date notes about clients – e.g. their name, number, and any allergies
  • Refer the client to their doctor if necessary

Industry Setting and Salaries

The majority of beauticians choose to work in beauty salons, but a few are employed elsewhere e.g. in spas and hotels. In general, beauty salons are a brilliant place to work as the environment is usually friendly and relaxing.

When it comes to salary, a beautician’s income will often vary from month to month depending on the time of year. Beauticians will often receive tips from their customers, but they are usually unpredictable, so cannot always be counted on.

The Qualifications

Beauticians are usually expected to have gained a relevant qualification before starting their careers. This Diploma of Beauty Therapy from TrainSmart Australia is one example of a course you could enroll on.

This course consists of 25 units and takes approximately 12 months to complete. If you have a passion and drive for working in beauty, then this is a brilliant option for you.

The Diploma of Beauty Therapy course is the highest qualification in the beauty industry. It gives you the knowledge and skills you need to work in this industry.

After completing a diploma in beauty therapy, lots of students choose to complete a standalone course that certifies them to perform the latest techniques and skills for their customers.

This could be a special massage course like a hot stone massage, or it could be a course to offer semi-permanent makeup.

Job Growth Outlook

Between 2016 and 2026, the demand for beauticians in Australia is expected to increase by approximately 13%.

Employee turnover, increased demand for trained professionals, and retirement in an aging population will lead to approximately 87,600 jobs opening up in the beauty industry over the next few years. Although lots of jobs will be available, competition for these roles will be fierce.

Beauticians are able to express their creativity, earn generous tips, and have the ability to make their customers happy. If you’re interested in becoming a beautician, then why not find a course today?
