What to Do If an Accident or Health Crisis Throws You for a Loop

Life is a strange thing. Sometimes, everything is going perfectly, you are performing to the peak of your abilities, and your plans are working out exactly as you want them to.

… And then, like a bolt of lightning out of a clear blue sky, you fall victim to some accident, or some unexpected health crisis, and are completely thrown for a loop.

When your life is thrown into turmoil by an unexpected health crisis, it can be very difficult to remain positive and to figure out the best way to proceed. But it’s essential that you don’t submit to despondency and lose your sense of direction altogether.

Here are some things you should do if an accident or health crisis throws you for a loop.

Adjust your scope of planning, and focus on doing whatever it is you can to keep up some form of momentum

If you are afflicted by a sudden health crisis or accident, one of the most heartbreaking consequences is often that all your carefully made plans and goals suddenly seem beyond reach. Maybe you just can’t work in the way you once did, to pursue those goals. Or, maybe, the goals themselves have been made redundant by what happened to you.

The thing to do in such an event isn’t to abandon your goals, and to stop planning. Instead, you need to adjust the scope of your planning appropriately and focus on doing whatever it is you can to keep up some form of momentum.

Maybe you need to be less ambitious in your career aspirations for a while. Or maybe you need to scale your goals back to a six-month horizon, instead of a two-year one. Just remember that moving towards some target is always more uplifting than staying still.

Practice a bit of self-compassion, and do what’s best for your health and well-being

People, in general, are often pretty terrible when it comes to practicing self-compassion, and going easy on themselves after an accident or health emergency.

All too often, the negative self-talk takes over, and we start berating ourselves for the fact that we are limited by our condition.

It’s important to fight against this impulse if you notice in yourself and to do what’s best for your health and well-being, instead. If you’ve been injured in an accident that was no fault of your own, this may include contacting Hadley Law Firm or a similar company to file a legal claim. At the very least, it means getting plenty of rest and looking for opportunities to find a bit of happiness and relief.

Spend time with the people closest to you

As human beings, we are all naturally social creatures to some extent, and even the most introverted person needs genuine and caring human connection in order to maintain a sense of well-being.

If you’re going through a difficult time due to injury or illness, try to spend plenty of time with the people closest to you, and just enjoy their company.

Talk to them, watch films together, whatever. Just don’t isolate yourself away at home, alone.
