Packing up Your Office: How To Prepare for Moving Day

Source

Moving offices is a very stressful experience. You may feel as though you have only good things to look forward to and you may also feel as though you have a new office to decorate as well.

Work mornings are suddenly that little bit brighter and you may even be excited about the day ahead. The problem is that if you don’t pack up your office properly then you risk leaving a paper trail behind.

This is every cyber criminal’s jackpot, so it helps to be prepared for this.

Furniture

A furniture removalist service can help you to pack away all of your furniture and they can also help you to get any hefty furniture such as bookcases and desks moved as well.

The problem is that if you want to get the best result out of your move then you need to pack as many things down as possible. You will need to empty all of the drawers out of your desk and you will also want to pack away everything you can into boxes as well.

It helps to take pictures of your desk and even your bookcase so you can easily rebuild your furniture when you arrive at the new office.

You can also use masking tape and a marker to number the number of pieces that you have and the order that they need to be assembled in.

It does help to keep all of the screws and nails together in a zip lock plastic bag if you are doing it all yourself, but if you can’t pack down your furniture for any reason then do make sure that you tape any drawers shut as this will stop them from flinging open when you load them into the van.

Backing Up

The last thing you’ll want to happen is to lose all of your files and data when you are moving. You’ll want to back everything up on a memory stick or even onto an online cloud storage system.

This will help you to ensure everything is completely safe and it will also help you to make sure that it is in very capable hands.

If you want to make sure that your computer is protected when moving then remove the hard drive. This is where your most important files are stored and it is very easy to take out and carry with you.

If you have any spare computer parts then consider putting them back in the boxes that they came in, because this is a great way for you to protect them from static damage and it is also a good way for you to ensure everything is being done to stop any knocks and bangs.

When moving the tower, take extra care and wrap everything in bubble wrap. With the printer, remove all of the ink cartridges and make sure that all of the cables are unplugged as well. Things often get banged around and caught when moving, so you have to make sure that the wires don’t bend in the back of the device.

As for the cartridges, consider wrapping them in cling film so that if the ink does spill out, it doesn’t go over anything important. Your moving company will most likely be able to help you with this as well, so you won’t have any issues there.

Legal Documents

When moving, it is imperative that you don’t leave a paper trail. Make scans and copy all of the important documents you need and shred any outdated documents you have.

If you have a lot of receipts then consider putting these in an envelope and seal it up. You can then put this on your other documents without worry of them flying out and being blown away by the wind.

When packing up books, try and keep them stacked up as this will help them to stop being damaged but if you can’t do this then put them spine-down in a box.

A lot of people make the mistake of putting the books the other way around when packing but this can lead to the corners of the book denting and it can also make it much harder for you to protect them.

You may also want to put some sheets of bubble wrap down as well, as this will cushion the books if anything should happen when they are in transportation. If you are going to need the books as soon as you arrive then mark on the box that they are important and need to be unpacked first.

How do you plan to move your office?  I’m actually in the process of doing this right now and it’s been a process but these have been some of the things I’ve learned.  So what have you learned?  Share your thoughts below.

Cheers!
