If your job means more to you than just a paycheck, chances are you’re striving to develop a career from it.

It doesn’t matter how long you’ve been in this role, you can still push forward and move on up that career ladder. Did you know that you can use your current job to advance a career in a different field?

All it takes is a little tenacity and some clever planning.

Making A Choice

Even if you hate your job, choosing something different is never easy.

You might feel that there aren’t many options open to you. Transferable skills and qualifications are easier to identify than you think. List all the things you do on a daily basis in general terms.

Now start going through some job listings that pique your interest. There will undoubtedly be some matches. Your current job could be providing you with the experience and skills you need for a new career that you’ll love.

Making Some Noise

Until you start telling potential employers about your skills, experience, and qualifications, you won’t be offered any opportunities.

Start to refine your resume.

Update it with your latest experience, project successes, and recent training. You might be able to pad it out more with projects you’ve taken on at home.

Attend some networking events and let people know what you do. You could be in demand sooner than you think.

Making The Move

If you’ve decided to make a move up that career ladder, then you need to put together an action plan to get there. Boost your education with more qualifications.

For example, a masters in healthcare administration, or a doctorate in information technology could help you reach the level of position you aspire to. Know where you want to be and work out how to get there.

Now push on to achieve what needs to be done for your next step up.

Making An Impression

Don’t be afraid to get involved in new projects in your current role. Making a good impression is essential if you want to be considered for bigger and better things.

Suggest new ideas and better ways of working. You might have to prepare presentations to get yourself heard, but if you have an idea, you need to get it out there.

Do your homework and make sure you’re ready to answer any questions. It doesn’t matter if your idea isn’t picked up. It’s about getting yourself in front of people that have the power to help your career.

Making It Up

Does your career have to follow a particular route?

No.

You can make it up as you go along. Not every company has a great career progression opportunity. You may find yourself applying for new jobs to help you get along.

Sometimes a sideways movement offers more experience and greater opportunities for the future. There may even be times when going it alone is the best thing you can do to get where you want to be.

Which direction are you heading right now?
