Some professionals set out to enter a career at the top, but, in the vast majority of cases, managers are made when underdogs turn into the stunning swans we know they can be.

Many of these individuals never intended to aim for the boardroom, but increasing dissatisfaction and the desire to create change have birthed some of the most incredible managers in the business sphere.

If you’re starting to feel the itchy feet feeling that your company is run about as well as a kid’s party, then you may be entering the first stage of just such an evolution.

It can be a frightening time, but with online courses at our fingertips teaching us everything from how to become a construction manager to how to acquire someone else’s business, there’s no reason you shouldn’t make this change by the hands.

If, however, you’re in doubt about whether you’re the right person for this task, consider the following signs that your underdog days are over.

Sign # 1 – You’re accepting increasing amounts of responsibility

Many of us enter a career promising ourselves that we won’t accept responsibility for things like locking up, cash handling, or organizing events. Yet, when you’ve been flourishing in a position for a while, responsibility has a habit of creeping up.

Before you know it, you’re opening and shutting the office, hosting business events on your own, and even becoming a go-to for others. All at the same pay grade as the guy who does none of these things.

It’s not fair, but it is a sure sign that you’ve outgrown your current position. After all, you’re already clearly doing these things well. Why not enjoy a pay raise that reflects this by turning these skills towards a managerial role?

Sign # 2 – Your boss comes to you for suggestions

If you’ve been in your role for a while, there’s a chance you’ve seen a boss or two come and go. Even if that’s not the case, your knowledge working on the ground has probably given you a great deal of insight into your company’s inner workings.

Hence, your boss may come to you for suggestions and insights. Again, this means you’re effectively working in a management capacity without the benefits. Not to mention that it’s a sure sign you’d be able to do a better job at creating the company culture everyone’s crying out for!

Sign # 3 – You’re fed up with being told what to do

In some instances, you may simply find that you’re fed up with being told what to do and how to do it.

This is especially likely if the people at the top have less experience/knowledge, but can even occur when you have a knowledgeable boss but have been working under them for too many years.

At some stage, you may just start wishing that you were the one giving the orders for once and, if you find that you can’t shake that feeling, then you’re probably more than ready to turn it into a reality.
