3 Tips For Safer City Driving

Source

While many people might feel a little scared of jumping on the freeway in their car, driving in the city isn’t exactly safer for you than going at these fast speeds.

With more to have to pay attention to and a need for faster reflexes and reaction times, city driving can still be very dangerous if you’re not paying attention or driving distracted.

So to help you avoid getting into a car accident while you’re stuck in rush hour traffic, here are three tips for safer city driving.

#1 Opt For A Smaller Car

Although you may feel like you need to be bigger and higher if you want to appear more intimidating on the road, a car like this won’t really help to make city driving any easier.

Especially if you’re driving in a city that’s already known for having narrower lanes or smaller parking space, it makes sense to try to pick a car that’s going to fit better in these areas.

According to Joanne Helperin, a contributor to Edmunds.com, cars that are smaller all-around is also going to avoid getting dents or scratches from being parked too close to other cars.

#2 Be On The Lookout For Pedestrians

If you’re driving on a highway or freeway, you don’t really have to worry too much about pedestrians. However, when you’re driving around a city, there’s likely going to be people everywhere that you’re going to need to be on the lookout for.

According to Driving-Test.org, pedestrians always have the right of way when in a crosswalk, so make sure you’re taking extra care around these areas.

In addition to crosswalks, you should also always be scanning the road at busy intersections and on the sidewalks to ensure that you’re not trying to pass through an area at the same time that someone else is trying to cross the street, whether it be legally or illegally.

Hitting someone with your car is the last thing you want to have happened.

#3 Increase Your Following Distance

Although you likely won’t be driving at very fast speed when cruising around a city, it’s still important that you have the right following distance between yourself and the car in front of you.

According to Rachel Halliwell, a contributor to The Telegraph, cars all around you could need to slam on their brakes at any given moment to avoid a collision in front of them.

And if you’re following too closely, you could be the one who crashes into them. In addition to this, you also want to be aware of parked cars that might try opening their doors into traffic or coming out of their parking spot without watching around them.

To help you feel safe when driving around a busy city, consider using the tips mentioned above to alter your driving habits.
