2 Things To Think About Before Embarking On A Real Estate Career

March 4, 2020 by Christopher

Some people rely on jobs that ensure that they have a stable, weekly income. Others like to have a little more autonomy and are less concerned with regular paychecks and more concerned with enjoying what they do.

For the latter, a career in real estate could be the smart choice, because it provides so many perks to those who do not want to work in a typical nine-to-five job. But, as with everything, there are advantages and disadvantages to think about before quitting your job and starting up in this field.

Here, we are going to look at a couple of them.

You can choose your own working hours

If setting your own hours and not being stuck at a desk all day long is your dream, a career in real estate may be ideal for you. It provides versatility and independence so that you can do things your way. This appeals to many people, particularly those who appear to be free spirits and do not flourish in a traditional nine-to-five environment.

If you prefer to work in the afternoon or evening, you can. Your working hours are entirely your choice.

BUT…

Setting your working hours does not necessarily mean that you are suddenly going to have plenty of spare time. In fact, you are more likely to work more hours than if you have a traditional office job, showing houses in the evening but having to get up and deal with lawyers, banks and so on first thing in the morning.

You could end up showing houses later in the evening, but you still have to get up early in the morning to take care of the business side of things, such as dealing with banks, lawyers, etc.

You can wear multiple hats

Working in real estate means that you are going to take on a lot of different roles within the job and wear a lot of different hats. It means that your work will never be tedious. One minute, maybe you are working as a financial advisor, the next, an interior design consultant or project manager.

Ultimately, you are going to do what needs to be done to meet the needs of your customers to make it easier for them to buy a home and make you a profit or commission.

BUT

There are times when you are going to have to think on your feet or call in a professional, such as a specialized real estate accountant to give you a hand. You can feel like you are juggling lots of plates trying to take care of everything that your client needs, and sometimes, you might feel like you are going to drop one.

There are many issues that can crop up in the real estate, and many of them are entirely unpredictable and need sorting immediately.

Real estate is certainly not for everyone, so it’s worth thinking carefully about what you enjoy most in your career and what you hope you’ll eventually get out of it.
