Spiders incite fear in a lot of people, so much so that reacting to finding spiders with a flamethrower is a popular joke to make in the Internet.
Jokes aside, some of the most venomous spiders in the country are found in Arizona – and in dealing with them, you’ll want to enlist the help of the best spider exterminator in Phoenix, AZ.
The black widow, the brown recluse, and the hobo spiders are some of the most dangerous spiders found in the United States of America, and 2 out of 3 of these can be found right in Arizona!
That’s the black widow spider and the brown recluse spider. Thankfully, the hobo spider has not been reported in Arizona, however, another venomous spider is – and that’s the yellow sac spider.
The Black Widow Spider
The black widow is famous – shiny, black, with a telltale red hourglass marking on the underside of its abdomen (though sometimes there is no hourglass shape and just red markings). It’s the most dangerous spider in the US and is one of the most dangerous spiders in the world.
While they’re usually black, they can also be dark brown in color. One of the dangers of this spider is that it likes to hide in low-lying dark areas, so it may be too late to spot them before you unknowingly intrude on them – and they feel threatened enough to bite you.
You’ll feel a pinprick when it bites you (and sometimes these bites may even leave double fang marks) and you’ll feel an immediate, burning sensation, and it has been compared to a bee sting. Redness and swelling develop and may last for a week.
But it doesn’t stop there – you’ll start to feel hot and as the venom spreads across your body, you’ll feel your muscles spasm uncontrollably. It’s not just agonizing, but it also affects your neurological system and you end up hallucinating until you receive the anti-venom. Before the anti-venom was discovered, about 5% of all black widow bites proved to be fatal.
Some symptoms of a black widow bite include weakness, nausea, dizziness, abdominal pain, muscle cramps, tremors, vomiting, chest pain and respiratory issues.
Not everyone reacts the same way though and some people only experience milder symptoms. Nevertheless, if you think you’ve been bitten by a black widow spider, seek medical attention right away.
The Brown Recluse Spider
Brown recluse spiders are yellowish-tan to tan in color, and they have a violin-shaped mark on their upper cephalothorax (where their legs are connected).
These spiders are also known as violin spiders or fiddleback spiders because of the violin-shaped mark. Brown spiders are commonly mistaken for the desert recluse and the wolf spider. Unlike a lot of other spiders, they only have 6 eyes instead of 8 like the wolf spider does.
These spiders are one of the most dangerous spiders in the US, and their venom is necrotic or tissue-destroying. Their venom is actually more potent than that of a rattlesnake’s, but fortunately they’re only able to inject less of this venom, therefore, doing less damage.
While some reports state that bites from brown recluse spiders can also feel similar to a bee sting, others state that they didn’t feel any immediate pain– but symptoms usually occur in the next few hours after which you may feel severe itching, nausea, vomiting, fever, severe pain, and muscle pain.
A white blister may initially develop, and in more severe cases, necrotic lesions and scarring follow.
If you think you’ve been bitten by a brown recluse spider, seek medical attention right away.
Spiders don’t tend to be aggressive – the black widow and the brown recluse are known to shy away from humans (and the brown recluse is actually named as such because it is reclusive), and will only bite if they feel threatened.
Most of the time, this happens because we got too close and didn’t realize they were there.
When handling spiders yourself, make sure you’re wearing protective clothing such as thick gloves and heavy boots, and never try to handle the spider with your hands – but because of the severity of the effects of their bites, we would recommend getting in touch with professional spider exterminators in Phoenix!
