Choosing A New Career as A Mature Student

 

Choosing to change careers later in life can be one of the best things you can do. Sometimes, life doesn’t take us down the path we had planned in high school, but that doesn’t mean you have to stay on the track you are on.

There are many benefits to changing your careers later in life and your age shouldn’t be a factor when considering whether or not to change your career.

In fact, with age, comes experience and a whole new skill set that you possibly wouldn’t have had when you left education.

There are some things you can only learn and develop as an adult and whilst you may not have youth on your side, you definitely have experiences that can benefit you in a variety of new job roles.

But is there such a thing as a good career to take up as you get older?

As they say, the sky’s the limit and if you are chasing a lifelong dream or a new passion, nothing should stop you reaching your goal, that being said, being a mature student with life experience under your belt can open up many different career paths you may not have considered when you were younger.

 

Psychiatry

If you have found that you have developed a skill for being able to listen and assist people with their problems, then a career in psychiatry could be the job for you.

However, this is something that can be years in the making as a typical psychologist can study for up to 8 years to become board certified.

However, once you gain your qualifications there are positions in various settings across the country for you to take up as you fulfill your new dream and embark on a whole new career.

 

Nursing

Nursing is a great career for people to take up later in life.

A nurse will spend a lot of time talking to and working with the public. Whilst many people go into this noble profession from school, there is a quality you can bring to the role as a mature student. you will see a wide spectrum of people from all walks of life and you may find you are now perfect for the role.

Depending on your qualifications training can be from 2 years to become fully qualified. However, once you have completed your initial training and gain your qualification, you have a new vocation for life.

 

Social Worker

Becoming a social worker can expose you to many situations you may not have encountered before. But this is an area that would benefit from people who have lived through and dealt with many obstacles in life.

A career in social work will give you an opportunity to help people and put your own experiences into helping others change their lives or help them at a time when they need it the most.

Maybe you are a parent who can use that particular skill set to help other children who are less fortunate or other new parents, navigate parenthood to help them become the best parents they can be and guide them to make the right choices.
