3 Tips For Creating Low Maintenance Landscaping

March 16, 2019 by Christopher

While you might love the idea of having a large, sprawling lawn with gorgeous, mature trees, and flowers that always seem to be in bloom, most people know that this dream landscaping isn’t something that they can reasonably keep up with.

More often than not, it makes more sense to create a landscape design that is lower maintenance than something that you’d have to spend hours taking care of each week.

So if you don’t have a full-time gardener to take care of all your landscaping needs, here are three tips to help you create a more low maintenance landscape design.

#1 Consider Installing A Sprinkler System

If you don’t want to sacrifice having grass in your landscape design, there are things you can do to help make its maintenance less of a hassle for you.

One of the best things to do, according to David Beaulieu, a contributor to The Spruce, is to install an automatic sprinkler system. While the initial cost of the installation might seem a little steep to you, an automatic sprinkler system can help save you money in the long run by preventing you from having to replant your lawn if it dies and keep you from paying for wasted water.

So if you can afford it, having a sprinkler system can take a lot of the maintenance work out of having a large grass lawn.

#2 Replace Some Grass Areas With Mulch

For those who aren’t wanting to install a sprinkler system and don’t want to have to deal with grass in their yard, another great option could be to bring in mulch in some areas.

By replacing just some of the grass with mulch, you can see numerous benefits to your entire landscaping design and health.

According to Leanna Potts, a contributor to HouseLogic.com, mulch helps keep weeds at bay, doesn’t require nearly as much watering as grass does and can help to make the soil of your lawn healthier, which will make it easier for you to keep your plants alive.

#3 Embrace Rock

In some instances, mulch may even be too much maintenance. So if you’re feeling like you want something that will always look beautiful without you ever really have to think about it, you may want to consider embracing a rock garden.

According to Christ Lambton, a contributor to Elle Decor, you can use crushed stone just like you would use mulch, as an accent to other design elements of your landscaping.

Additionally, you can also use larger landscaping stones to add beauty to your yard in a way that requires virtually zero maintenance once you’ve situated the rocks how you want them.

If you have an area that you’d like to have landscaped but you don’t want to have to spend a lot of time maintaining it on your own, consider using the tips mentioned above to help you find some options that will suit you perfectly.
