Then you should start work on patenting and prototyping today!

First Up: Is Your Idea Original?

Please make sure that your idea isn’t already in existence. Prototyping can be fun and extremely informative, but it’s time-consuming and costs money.

You want to make sure that the idea hasn’t already been patented before you begin this endeavor.

Consulting with Experts

Some people prefer to pursue this goal as independently as possible. But prototyping isn’t as simple as a lot of people believe it is.

And I’m not just talking about the engineering or physical side of things. Actually planning out the things your prototype needs to do can be fairly tricky. You may want to consider working with an idea design studio.

The fact is that there are many buddy inventors out there who simply don’t have the time required to develop this idea as they should. Speaking of which…

Making the Time

However you decide to go about this, it’s going to take a lot of time and effort.

Many people may even be tempted to cut their working hours or leave their job altogether in order to focus on this development. This has, of course, worked out very well for some inventors.

But you need to be careful. You’re going to need a source of income, right?

So you may want to see how much you can achieve outside of working hours, first.

If you do want to cut your hours to spend more time on it, then make sure you’ve saved up enough money to support yourself for a few months. (As well as to cover the costs of prototyping!)

Otherwise, you might be better off working with the aforementioned external help.

Software is Your Friend

When people think of prototypes, they tend to think of the wrong sort of thing. They picture what the final product will look like, as well as every single one of its features.

So they set out to make a perfect replica of what they dream the final product to be.

But the prototype doesn’t have to be feature-complete, nor does it have to look beautiful. In fact, it can be very simplistic. It can even be completely virtual! Software can help you here.

Computer-aided design and 3D modelling can help you build a virtual prototype that can get investors interested.

Many even work with 3D printing. While you can get yourself a 3D printer, you might be better off looking for local places that allow you to use their 3D printer. However, if you want to physically construct your prototype, you will need the use of specialised machinery that can help you create the basis of your vision. Looking into low volume machining can aid you as it provides a high quality result for your prototype.

Patent!

One of the hot questions for budding inventors: do you patent the idea before the prototype, or after?

Many people believe it only makes sense to prototype it beforehand. You should know that U.S. patent laws don’t require you to have a prototype built. However, you do have to be able to describe the invention in extraordinary detail.

And if your prototype differs from these specifications, it may not be protected by the patent you filed.

Features being added during prototyping leads many to file multiple patents. This may be done before and during prototyping. Which, of course, gets expensive! However, it is an approach you can take.

Some prefer to prototype the invention beforehand. It depends how certain you are that no-one will come up with the same idea during that process!
