8 Signs that you are In the Wrong Job

Do you worry that the job you are in now isn’t suited to you over the long term? Maybe you feel as though you need to pivot in your career but you just don’t know how to go about doing this.

Either way, it’s essential to know that now is the time to make a change. If you don’t make a change now, then you may find that you spend years on end in the wrong job, and this can drastically impact your career progression.

1. You Don’t Connect with Colleagues

You probably know that some people just go to work, and they don’t make friends. That being said, if you can’t find the motivation to engage with the people around you, then this can be a major red flag.

Remember that your work colleagues are people who you are supposed to be sharing a common cause with. If you know that you don’t share any interests with them, then this can be a sign that you need to move on.

2. You Don’t Feel Like Yourself

You shouldn’t ever feel pressured to change the way that you behave when at work. Whether it is in a professional context or even in an interpersonal way, you shouldn’t feel like someone else when you go to work each day.

You should always feel at home when you’re at work. If you don’t then this is a sign that you are hiding who you are and this can make you feel worse than you need to.

3. Sunday Evening Blues

Nobody likes going to work. That being said, if you have an intense feeling of dread when Sunday evening rolls around, then this can indicate that you need to make a change.

Sunday evenings should have you feeling like you are brimming with ideas, as to how you are going to take on the new week and all of the challenges that come with it. If you have never felt this way, then this indicates that you might not be in the right job.

4. Your Values Don’t Align

If you are compassionate and empathetic to others, then a job pushing hard sales might not be the best position for you. You may feel as though you find it difficult to push someone into buying something that they don’t want, and this can lead to a lot of depression and anxiety.

5. You Get Bored Describing Your Job

If you feel as though you just get so bored when describing your job, whether it is at a family dinner or even a party event, then this is a sign that something has to change.

If you are in the wrong job, then you may find it difficult to be enthusiastic about anything, and this can work against you.

6. You Can’t Relate

Whether or not you notice it, your company will communicate a set of values. This will outline the long-term goals of the organization as well as how the company in question wants to achieve them.

Things like this should resonate with you and if you do not agree with all of them, then you should at least respect them and have enough drive to help the company achieve them.

7. You Seek Distractions

Are you doing a coffee run every half an hour? Do you find that you are always scheduling unnecessary meetings? Maybe you order a lot of packages to the office just so you can nip down to collect them.

Either way, if you are always seeking distractions, then this will make it very difficult for you to apply yourself to your job, which, if you’re in the wrong one, could prove to be difficult anyway.

8. You Only have Financial Rewards

If you had to pick one thing that you are forever looking for in a job, what would it be? Does a solid wage end up trumping a good work and life balance? What about cultural fit?

Probably not. There is nothing wrong with loving the money you get from a job, but at the same time, you do need to make sure that money isn’t just the sole motivating factor as to why you get out of bed in the morning.

If it is, then this is a clear indicator that you need to change things up.
