Accused of a Crime? What To Do Next

February 24, 2019 by Christopher

It can be very painful to be accused of a crime. Maybe you didn’t know you were doing anything wrong. Perhaps someone is out to get you. Maybe the circumstances were misunderstood or misconstrued.

But after the accusation happens, you have to work quickly to defend yourself. And it’s better to prepare early for this defense early rather than be surprised by your need to do it later.

You should take several steps to try to get yourself psychologically and financially situated. You should hire a lawyer immediately. You should take steps to understand the accusation. You should gather your resources as much as possible that relate to the case.

And you should find similar cases that resolved positively for a person in your position.

Hire a Lawyer

If you’ve been accused of a crime, you should hire a criminal defense lawyer immediately. There is some expense involved in this.

However, you don’t want your financial situation to overrule practicality. Hire the best lawyer that you can afford so that you don’t end up with a criminal conviction on your record.

In extreme instances, you may end up having to go to jail unnecessarily because you don’t defend yourself appropriately.

Understand the Accusation

It’s imperative that you understand the accusation being leveled against you. Do you know the difference between a misdemeanor and a felony?

Depending on what you’re accused of and what kind of plea deals are in order, that distinction can make a difference for the rest of your life.

Being convicted of a misdemeanor versus a felony can change your opportunities for jobs, schools, housing, and many other different aspects of your life. Be sure to understand all the ramifications involved in these two categories.

Gather Your Resources

If you been accused of a crime, you want to avoid a situation where you are saying something other than someone else is. To avoid that conflict, gather all of the resources possible to present your side of the story.

Photos, videos, text messages or any references to the time frame in question will be very important if you want proof that you didn’t do anything wrong.

The more evidence that you collect, along with the way a lawyer presents this evidence, may make the difference between conviction and acquittal.

Find Similar Cases That Resolve Positively

A final thing that you can do to help yourself be acquitted of a crime is looking through similar cases where the person in your position got a positive resolution.

Lawyers and judges are always looking for cases that have been resolved similarly during a trial. If you can point to a situation where someone in your position was not convicted of an offense because of similar circumstances, this will work to your benefit.
