6 Tips to Start Saving Money on Your Water Bill

Source

Are you struggling to make ends meet with your current salary? Are your savings depleting as the bills mount up?

Reducing your water bill might not cross your mind when it comes to saving money, but it can make a huge difference. According to The Hamilton Project, the average household water bill in large U.S. cities ranges from $25 to $70 per month. That’s easily at least $300 spent on the water every year!

Try these six easy tips to reduce your water bill and save your hard-earned cash!

#1 Fix Leaky Pipes and Faucets

According to the EPA, the average household’s leaks contribute to more than 10,000 gallons of water wasted every year. It’s also reported that 10 percent of homes have leaks that waste 90 gallons or more per day.

Keep an eye out for critical plumbing issues such as leaky pipes and overflowing toilets and fix them immediately to avoid water waste.

#2 Take Showers Instead of Baths

One of the easiest ways to reduce water usage is to switch to taking showers instead of baths. On top of that, try to limit your shower time.

Even a one- or two-minute reduction in shower time can save a significant amount of water in the long run. Also, be mindful and turn off the water when you are brushing your teeth or shaving.

#3 Switch to a Low-Flow Shower Head

Older shower heads had flow rates of up to 5.5 gallons per minute (gpm). However, federal regulations require new shower heads to have flow rates of not more than 2.5 gpm.

Switch to low-flow shower heads today and cut up to 60 percent from your water usage!

#4 Add Aerators to Your Faucets

Faucet aerators reduce the flow of water from 2.2 gpm to 1.5 gpm. An aerator attaches to the faucet head and injects air into the water stream, thus reducing the amount of water coming through.

The reduction in water volume increases the water pressure, allowing you to enjoy maximum performance while saving some cash!

#5 Use Your Dishwasher

According to the National Resources Defense Council, you use up to 27 gallons of water per load when washing dishes by hand.

On the contrary, it takes as little as 3 gallons to do the same with an Energy Star-rated dishwasher. You can save even more if you just scrape off the food scraps instead of rinsing each plate before loading up the dishwasher.

#6 Only Run the Dishwasher and Washing Machine When Full

Fit in as many dishes as you can in the dishwasher before running it. This reduces the number of times you need to run it every day.

Another great option is to stop the dishwasher before it goes through the drying cycle. Just open the door and let the dishes air-dry! Likewise, wait until you have a full load of dirty clothes before doing your laundry.

You can also reduce the frequency of washing by wearing outerwear more than once if the items aren’t dirty.
