Chances are you’ve already received your Cencus letter in the mail. In fact you may have even filled it out and sent it back. However did you know that there is a scam going around?
In this article I’m going to pass along some helpful tips to look for and do so you don’t get ripped off buy a Cencus scam.
The Less You Know The Better
It always seems when something comes along that people don’t know a lot about the scammers come out in full force. Whether it’s email scams, eBay scams, or boiler room scams, people are out there to take advantage of you any way they can.
It’s no different with the Census when it comes to scams. The truth is scammers believe the less you know the easier is it will be to take advantage of you. The best way to combat against these things is to continually read up on these things before you get ripped off yourself.
How The Cencus Scammers Are Ripping You Off
There are two ways the scammers are taking advantage of you with the Cencus. The first is by phone; once you receive your Cencus letter someone may call you and inform you that they are from the Cencus Bureau and need to ask you some questions. Whatever you do don’t give them any information, because nobody from the Cencus Bureau would contact you in this method.
The second method the scammers are using to rip off people is by sending you an email telling you that either you need to verify your information or that you may even have to pay a fee for whatever reason they make up. Whatever you do don’t give them any information like credit card numbers, your social security number or banking information. Also if they happen to send you an email with an attachment don’t open it. More than likely it’s something that isn’t good for you or your computer.
What You Should Look For
If you fail to send your Cencus letter back you will probably get a visit from them. If this happens there are a few things you should keep in mind when they come by to chat.
First, they should have the proper identification when they show up at your door. Don’t be afraid to ask to see their identification badge either, if they don’t have it do not allow them to enter the house no matter what. Even if they claim they could arrest you. If they don’t have the proper Cencus bureau identification you have the right to stop them from entering.
Second, they should be carrying a Cencus Bureau canvas bag. This bag carry’s the proper government seal. If they have anything else but this bag it should through up a red flag immediately.
Third they should have a confidentiality notice upon meeting with you. If they do not request one first before they go any further.
Finally, ask for their name and contact information. They should hand you a business card which should contain their name, location of there government office, and phone number.
